WGC has the largest number of teams of any school or club competing in the Wellington Netball Union (WNU) competition, with approximately 40 teams.

Netball Notice board

The netball notice board is updated regularly with all
trial, team and draw details displayed. It is situated outside the Sports Office in the Gym Foyer.

Competition

Teams will play at Hataitai courts on Saturdays, the time of the day depending on the grade. School teams play in Collegiate grades against other school teams except for Senior A, B, C and D teams which play in the women’s Premier competition.

Premier and College competition commences early May and goes through until the end of August.

The Senior A team will compete
1 In the Taita Premier tournament
2 In the Lower North Island tournament
3 If qualified, Nationals
The Jnr A team will compete in the Taita Junior tournament and the Senior A, B and Junior A teams will be involved in interschool exchanges.

Trials

All Year 9 students will need to trial and will be placed into teams. There will be pre-trial gradings carried out in school time. Trial dates are as follows:

Please watch the notices and the Netball noticeboard for trial times. They will also be in the Sports Booklet.

Top teams’ trials are open to all year levels, including
strong Year 9 and 10 players.

Recreational Teams

Year 10 – 13 students can make up their own team of 10 players (no less) plus appoint a parent manager, in consultation with the netball convenor. Rec. teams play in the same competition and grades as other teams. It is the responsibility of the rec. teams to find their own coach if they want one. The rec. team registration forms can be collected from outside the sports office, but each player still needs to complete their own registration form as well.

Training

Year 9 teams Tuesdays 2.30 – 3.30pm
Year 10 teams Thursdays 3.30 – 4.30pm
Senior Teams By arrangement

These times may vary depending on coach availability.

Each year a number of teams are coached by senior students who will run weekly trainings and attend Saturday games (except when their own games clash). All players are expected to attend trainings and we ask for the support of parents in this regard - training is not optional, except for the rec. teams. Players in all teams are required to make a full commitment to their team practices and to Saturday games. There will be an adult manager for every team with student coaches.

Pre Season Tournament

There will be a tournament run at WGC prior to the season start to finalise all junior teams. This will also be an opportunity for students to have a go at umpiring in a supportive environment.

Uniform

Senior A uniform supplied.
Senior B & C and Junior A teams’ shirts supplied, player’s own skirt.
All other teams – black skirts and white sports shirt with black collar, white ankle socks with supportive shoes. NO jewellery. WGC tracksuit for all teams.
Bibs, ball and gear bag are supplied to all teams and must be returned or paid for at the end of the season.

Coaching

We are always in need of coaches and managers. Coaching support is provided before and during the season. Please indicate your interest on your daughter’s netball registration form. Netball Wellington runs excellent coaching courses. See the details on their website www.netballwellington.co.nz and register early.
Senior students who wish to coach should register their interest on the netball notice board. There will be courses held at school for senior students wanting to coach.

Umpiring

Umpiring is compulsory for Collegiate 2 grade players and above. WGC will be providing courses prior to the start of the season which those players must attend. If you are a parent who is considering doing some umpiring, please see Netball Wellington’s website for information on their umpiring courses.

Cost

WGC netball registration fee of $85 must be paid during winter sport registration week. Rec. teams with unregistered players will not be entered into the competition.
